Dogs

Dogs Running at Large

Dogs are prohibited from running at large in the Municipality of Central Elgin.  To report a dog running at large, contact the St. Thomas - City Animal Services Centre located at 100 Burwell Road St. Thomas (Central Elgin’s animal control contractor) at 519-631-7430 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sundays and Holidays.  After hours calls, please call the Fire Department dispatach at 519-631-0210 and they will page on-call staff.  More information can be found at http://www.stthomas.ca/content/animal-services. 

If you have found a dog, please contact the City Animal Services Centre at 519-631-7430.  The Municipality of Central Elgin has a agreements with the City of St. Thomas to use the shelter for dogs.

Missing Dogs

If your dog is missing, call the City Animal Services Centre at 519-631-7430 to report your dog missing and inquire if the Animal Control Officer has picked it up.  Also ask if someone turned your dog in to the Shelter.  You may also want to report the dog missing to a neighboring municipality.

Dangerous and Potentially Dangerous Dogs

The Municipality also has a by-law to regulate potentially dangerous and dangerous dogs.  The By-law can require restrictions on the dog including:  muzzling and additional insurance.  To inquire about the process to have a dog declared dangerous or potentially dangerous, contact the Chief Building Official and By-law Enforcement Officer, email or 519-631-4860 Ext 274.

Dog Licences

Dog licences must be purchased annually for the calendar year  by dog owners.  Licences may be purchased from the Central Elgin Municipal Office in the Elgin County Administration Building, 450 Sunset Drive

Livestock

Livestock at Large

Livestock (cattle, horses, sheep, goats) running at large should be reported to the municipality by telephone, 519-631-4860, or to the police, 1-888-310-1122.

Cats

The Municipality does not have any by-laws regulating cats.
