TAX BILLS

Property tax bills are mailed out twice a year.

For 2021 The Due Dates as follows:

Interim Tax Bill Due Dates: February 15th and May 15th

Final Tax Bill Due Dates: August 15th and November 15th

Interim Tax

The 2021 interim tax billing is calculated at 50% of your 2020 property taxes. The 2021 final bills will be issued in July, and will reflect the current year's taxes less what has been levied for the interim billing.

 UNDERSTANDING YOUR TAX BILL

Your property tax bill total is based on three tax rates:

  • Municipal (Lower Tier) – established by Municipality of Central Elgin Council.
  • County (Upper Tier) - established by The County of Elgin.
  • Education – established by the Province.

The Municipality collects all three tax rates and then distributes approximately 49.86% of the taxes collected to the County of Elgin and application school boards.

Central Elgin Council has no control of the tax levies set by the County of Elgin, or the Province of Ontario education levies.

Each property within the Municipality has a property classification in accordance with the property’s use.

Each tax class has a separate tax rate.  The tax rates are determined when the annual budget has been approved.

Failure to receive a tax notice does not relieve the taxpayer from payment of taxes or penalty for late payment.  The Municipality is not responsible for bank or postal processing delays.  Please allow enough processing time for the payment to be received.   A $5.00 charge will apply for tax bill reprints.

Payments are applied first to any penalty and interest with the balance of payment applied to the oldest year's tax amount.
