Supporting Individuals with Autism and Sensory Sensitivities During Emergencies

Central Elgin Fire Rescue is now better equipped to support individuals with autism, sensory sensitivities or anyone experiencing sensory overload during an emergency.

Thanks to a private donation, Central Elgin Fire Rescue has received four Sensory Support Kits. The kits were designed and built by the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council in partnership with Autism Canada.

Each kit contains tools that can help firefighters reduce stress, support communication and provide comfort during an emergency, including noise-cancelling earmuffs, tinted safety glasses, fidget tools, a plush firefighter bear and non-verbal communication aids.

The kits are stored in durable, watertight containers on fire apparatus, making them easy for firefighters to access when they are needed.

Small tools can make a big difference when someone is experiencing a stressful or overwhelming situation. These kits give our firefighters another way to help people feel safer, more comfortable and supported during an emergency.
