Beach Accessibility

Beaches can be an accessibility challenge for visitors and residents using walkers or wheelchairs. Due to the soft sand; wheels and legs of walkers can sink in, making them tough to maneuver.

As part of the commitment to making Central Elgin beaches as accessible as possible, the Municipality continues to research beach accessibility measures to help visitors and residents explore the shorelines.

Boardwalk

The Municipality offers a smooth, cement walkway. Which is wide enough to allow for 2 wheelchairs to pass.

Mats

MobiMats are located at Main Beach and Little Beach and provide improved beach access for wheelchairs, strollers, and other mobility devices. At Main Beach, the 2-metre-wide mat extends from the boardwalk onto the beach and continues along the shoreline, creating a more accessible route across the sand. 

Hippocampe Chairs

These allow people with reduced mobility to move around freely between changing rooms, showers, and waterfronts. They can be submerged in water to simplify access to swimming. The seat and footrest cover is made of comfortable hydrophobic foam that protects its user.

There are 2 available at the Main Beach's lifeguard tower during beach patrol hours, and available for use upon request. They are free of charge, but users are asked to provide identification.
