Applications are now being accepted for short-term rental licences. Starting January 1, 2026, operators must have a valid licence under the Short-Term Rental Accommodations Licensing By-law before advertising, marketing, or renting a short-term rental property in Central Elgin.

The Municipality of Central Elgin introduced the licensing program to support community well-being, ensure safety for guests, and maintain property standards across the municipality. A short-term rental is defined as all or part of a legally established dwelling that is rented to the public for less than 28 consecutive days. This includes bed and breakfast establishments, hostels, rooming and boarding houses, but does not include hotels, motels, campgrounds, or trailer parks.

“This new licensing program will help ensure that short-term rentals in Central Elgin operate safely and responsibly, balancing community interests with tourism and economic opportunities,” said Mayor Andrew Sloan.

Key Requirements for Operators:

  • Starting January 1, 2026, operators must hold a valid licence before advertising, promoting, or renting a short-term rental property in Central Elgin. Properties cannot be marketed or listed without a licence and licensed operators must include their licence number in all advertisements and promotions. This ensures that visitors can easily identify licensed properties.
  • A Fire Inspection is required to ensure compliance with Fire Protection Standards. Staff will coordinate with the applicant to schedule a date and time for the inspection.
  • As part of the application, operators must include contact information for a Responsible Person, the person who will be accountable for responding to any complaints related to the Short-Term Rental by telephone within a period of 30 minutes.
  • Operating without a valid licence may result in enforcement action and fines.
