Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for our area. We are expecting a messy mix of wintery weather beginning late Wednesday carrying into Friday.
This is expected to bring rain late Wednesday through Thursday afternoon, transitioning into freezing rain and/or snow into Friday, followed by more snow Friday and Saturday.
This variable weather may create a hazardous conditions:
- Warmer temperatures and rain may increase snow melt, which could lead to localized flooding.
- Following the melt and rain, the temperature is expected to fall, which could lead to icy conditions.
Roads crews are actively monitoring the weather, and are prepared to respond as required. If warranted, Central Elgin may issue a declaration of a Significant Weather Event.
Staff will do what they can to keep drains working to prevent flooding, and will pre-emptively apply salt in order to help combat ice formation and slippery roads. As usual, they will remain on alert over the course of the next few days and the weekend, and are fully prepared to provide response as required.
Residents are encouraged to assist our efforts by keeping catch basins and drainage routes clear of snow, ice or other debris where possible, and to report any blockages or areas where there is water ponding on roads or sidewalks. This can be done by utilizing the ‘Report a Problem’ section of Central Elgin’s website. https://webforms.centralelgin.org/Report-a-Problem This assists staff in providing a more efficient response to these concerns while allowing for proper documentation of the issue. Please note that all submissions are appropriately reviewed and actioned upon where necessary, however staff will not necessarily provide a response back to every submission.
We also remind all residents and travellers to exercise caution while travelling our roads and sidewalks.
