The Municipality of Central Elgin is reminding property owners and operators that the Short-Term Rental Accommodations Licensing By-law is now in effect.
As of January 1, 2026, all short-term rental operators must hold a valid municipal licence before advertising, promoting, or renting a short-term rental unit in Central Elgin. Properties may not be marketed or listed without a licence, and licensed operators are required to include their licence number in all advertisements and promotions. This helps visitors easily identify licensed and compliant properties.
"This licensing program strengthens safety for everyone in our community," said Mayor Andrew Sloan. "By ensuring properties are safe and well-managed, we can protect guests, support residents, and preserve the character of our neighbourhoods."
How to Apply
Applications must be submitted online. Applicants are encouraged to review the Application Checklist and gather all required documentation before starting the process.
Resources and Support
Municipal staff are available to assist applicants and answer questions. Please call 519-631-4860 ext. 269 or email str@centralelgin.org for assistance.
Check if a Property is Licensed
Residents and visitors can verify whether a property is a licensed short-term rental using the Municipality’s interactive map. If an address appears, users can see whether the property is compliant or non-compliant with municipal regulations. If an address does not appear, the Municipality has no record of it operating as a short-term rental.
Have a Short-Term Rental Related Concern?
Residents can report issues such as unauthorized short-term rental activity, loud parties or noise complaints, and parking-related concerns online or by calling the 24-hour hotline at 548-708-8113.
The Municipality thanks residents for their ongoing cooperation and support in keeping Central Elgin safe and welcoming. By helping ensure that short-term rentals operate responsibly, residents play a vital role in protecting neighbourhoods and enhancing the experience for both visitors and community members.
